Allergies

Allergies are reactions your body has to certain substances called allergens. These allergens can be things like pollen, dust, pet dander, certain foods, or insect stings. When you come into contact with an allergen, your immune system mistakenly thinks it’s harmful and overreacts.

Common symptoms of allergies include:

  • Sneezing
  • Itchy or runny nose
  • Itchy or watery eyes
  • Skin rashes or hives
  • Coughing or wheezing

Allergies can range from mild to severe. Some people may need medication, like antihistamines, to help manage their symptoms. In some cases, severe allergic reactions (called anaphylaxis) can occur and require immediate medical attention. Avoiding allergens is often the best way to prevent allergic reactions.
