Pink eye

Pink eye

Pink eye, also called conjunctivitis, is an infection or inflammation of the thin, clear layer that covers the white part of your eye and the inside of your eyelids. It makes your eye look pink or red.

Common symptoms of pink eye include:

  • Red or pink color in the white of the eye
  • Itchy or burning eyes
  • Watery or sticky discharge (can make your eyes feel crusty, especially in the morning)
  • Swollen eyelids

Pink eye can be caused by:

  • Viruses (like a cold)
  • Bacteria
  • Allergies (like pollen or dust)
  • Irritants (like smoke or chlorine in pools)

Pink eye is contagious if caused by a virus or bacteria, so it’s important to wash your hands and avoid touching your eyes. Most cases get better on their own, but if it’s caused by bacteria, you may need antibiotic eye drops from a doctor.
