Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Descriptions

STDs, or sexually transmitted diseases, are infections that are spread from one person to another through sexual contact. They can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites.

Common STDs include:

  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • Herpes
  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

Many people with STDs may not have symptoms, but some common signs include:

  • Unusual discharge from the genitals
  • Pain during urination
  • Itching or irritation
  • Soars or warts in the genital area

STDs can often be treated with medication, but some, like HIV, cannot be cured. It’s important to practice safe sex, like using condoms, and to get regular check-ups to help prevent the spread of STDs. If you think you might have an STD, it’s important to see a doctor.
